I'm after a little hand holding here - I have a new Avon Cobra 190 tyre to go on the back of my bike (when I get it fitted to the rim next weekend when I have some time). Looking at the swinging arm (rounded type = early type - my bike is a 2002) it looks like there's going to be very little clearance if any. So the question is to those with a 190 or wider rear, did you modify the swinging arm at all? Second question: does your bike have the rounded (early) or squared off (later type) swinging arm?
(I've read a number of older threads on other forums where people claimed they'd fitted 190 and even larger with no mods required but I couldn't find any which specified which swinging arm type they have - I also don't actually know if this would make any difference but the later type looks to have more clearance)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for good news....

I am currently running a 200 on my rear. It's a 2004 model. The only thing with getting them on is after the bead is seated on the rim you need to let the air back out so it will slide in place. Clearance is tight but not too problematic.

Thanks Texas, I knew 2004 was the change year- that's why I was asking Sikotic if his is square or round. Really my question boils down to can I run a 190 with my early rounded swinging arm. I'll find out soon :-) Cheers

I'll find out soon :-) Cheers I'm almost certain you can since the critical area for rubbing looks to be the same on both styles of swingarms. www.ebay.com/itm/2002-2003-Kawasaki-MeanStreak-VN1500-1500-VN1500P-SWING-ARM-SWINGARM-/381994257957?hash=item58f0a1ce25:g:viUAAOSw4CFYvuWM&vxp=mtrSeveral years ago Speed posted a pic of the close 1.5 to 2.0mm spacing to the swingarm on the left side with that tire mounted and aired up...but I wasn't able to find it. You will probably have to let the air out of the rear tire to squeeze it under there and then air it back up once it is in place.

Thanks Texas, helps to put my mind at ease. I've compared lots of pics of swinging arms old and new type and read several threads on various forums. I think it should be fine but just looking at it yesterday in my garage I managed to sow the seeds of doubt in my mind. I'm expecting to have to let the wind out of the tyre to squeeze it into place - done that before on different bikes :-)
Once I've got it fitted I'll post results here. Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help I'm the same way, I always want the reassurance from those who have actual hands on "been there, done that" experience already. It certainly helps to ask so you know what to expect and can get those "helpful hints" and "how to's" about overcoming the problems that come with most changes we make to the bikes. These forums are like gold mines but we use questions instead of shovels to get to the golden nuggets of wisdom and experience. Pictures can be like using dynamite since they can often move tons of info all at once. Detailed hands on experience combined with pictures is the diamond mine.

You will though need to stand on your head, have two babies and a hammer to small your hands to get it past the final drive, so do yourself a big favor, remove fd, install as a, unit. You will only have about 2mm or so clearence to swing arm. It will not rub.

Second guessed doing it cause i wasn't sure it would have been just the 4 bolts on the cover.

You read my mind - I was thinking about doing it this way to avoid having to work wiggling miracles getting the wheel past the fd! Many thanks for helping to put my mind at ease, I'll be doing this job soon - won't be this weekend as something has come up and I have to travel but next weekend I'll finally be getting wheels on the frame and have a rolling bike!

Well, it's in. Quite easy really, I removed the final drive, placed it on the wheel and then slid the whole lot into position, it fits although there isn't much space between the tyre and the side of the swinging arm. I also mounted the front forks and the wheel (zerk installation will have to wait as the delivery with the tap and die/drill bit didn't arrive today).
