Work continued today, I spent some time finally getting the rest of the stuff off the casings before splitting. I then made use of the domestic parts washer to give them a preliminary clean. The Bosch parts washer is very versatile, it can even be used for plates, crockery and cutlery. I made sure to get this done before she-who-shall-be-obeyed gets home. I still have a fair bit of cleaning to do before getting things ready for re-painting and a mountain of gasket removal to tackle - not one of my favourite jobs but with a good razor blade it's not too bad. That used to be my job at the repair garage where I worked part time years ago, slow and steady gets it done without cutting the aluminium surfaces. The sharp eyed amongst you will spot one part that I most definitely will not be re-using - any takers? Here's some pics:

I see an o-ring on the floor Yep, that's the 'Gotcha!' Ring that's easy to forget. It's not the past I had in mind though

I also see a broken piece off in the case half in the bottom pic, looks like something bad happened there.

I also see a broken piece off in the case half in the bottom pic, looks like something bad happened there. Yes, I found that when I removed the covers, looks like someone didn't keep the cam chain taut when removing the clutch basket and it must have bunched up against the little rib on the case and broken that piece off. Not much I can do about that other than clean it up and remove the broken edge (dremel it nice and smooth again). I don't really think it will cause any problems but it's still annoying.

Did you find the broken piece inside when you open the cases up?

Did you find the broken piece inside when you open the cases up? Yes I did find it, laying in the oily muck in the sump, been there a while I think

Now that's a clean engine Thanks - even cleaner now, I spent time yesterday removing all the remains of old gaskets and de-greasing everything. It's now ready for re-paint once I finish masking everything up, I'll hopefully be getting it painted at the weekend. From that point onwards, all the work left is re-building and bolting onto the bike :-)

Great weather here today so I masked up the casing halves and took them outside to spray with a couple of rattle cans of very high temperature satin black: Here they are after the first two coats: Then I gave them a couple more coats over half an hour or so and left them to dry while I got on with the Zerk mod (see other thread). When I'd finished that I removed all the masking tape and cleaned up any over-spray whilst the paint was still soft, here they are after that: I'm quite pleased with how they turned out, they look pretty decent. Obviously the paint is still soft, ideally they should be oven baked for around an hour but I don't have any facility to do that. I've been in touch with the paint manufacturer and I've been advised that the paint will slowly air cure and will finally cure with engine heat. At the moment they're parked up in the greenhouse where the temperature is over 40 degrees Centigrade at the moment - nice and toasty. I expect the paint will be soft until I've run the engine up to temperature so I'll have to be very careful during re-assembly and installation. Cheers

They use plastic gears in my corvettes headlights too and they are junk, had to replace both but I'll bet mine were a little easier lol.

That engine is coming out great. I must've missed it earlier, but what engine are you using?

That engine is coming out great. I must've missed it earlier, but what engine are you using? Thanks Lee, it's an eBay find, very cheap but it's in great condition mechanically. It's from a '99 Classic but I have the correct MS final drive case with the speedo pickup cut out

Got it. The POG had me scratching my head, knew it couldn't be a MS engine.
