Here's a possibly daft question - is the front wheel handed? I can see a letter "R" on one side as part of the casting. The reason I'm asking is that I need to get my tyres mounted (tried doing it myself and it's a bitch, I gave up and I'll get the tyre shop to do it for me, I'm being really careful as I don't want to scratch the rims at all). The tyres are Avon Cobra's and they're directional so I need to mount them correctly. As I correct in thinking "R" means "Right side" or does it not matter?

But I think it doesn't matter

Let me first say that I don't know. Hopefully someone who does know will answer your question. I looked in the service manual and did not see anything mentioned. I suspect it doesn't make a difference, but just in case it does, and since the tire shop will mount the tire either way, have them mount the tire as if the R on the wheel is supposed to be on the right side of the bike. On our side of the pond that is called "covering your butt". As a side note: Whether it matters or not I do pay attention to mounting a new tire the same direction on the wheel as the old one was, mainly so the brake rotors end up back on the same sides and the same way they were broken in from the brake pads. Does it matter, again I don't know but I'm almost certain it doesn't hurt anything either. Again, just "covering my butt" as they say. Also as a side note here is a link to a PDF download of a 2004 1600 Mean Streak service manual which should cover all the 1600's from 2004 thru 2008. www.vulcanrider.se/en/kawasaki-vulcan-service-manuals/

Many thanks guys, to be on the safe side I'll go with "R" = "Right" Texas- I agree I would also pay attention when renewing the tyres so that the brake rotors spin the same way, this time though it's the first installation and I don't yet have any rotors (still on my shopping list). Thanks for the download link, that'll be very useful. :-)

I don't think there is a right way round, however my brake rotors rub if I put the wheel in the other way around .
When I take my wheel in for a tyre fitting I draw the direction of rotation on the rim in sharpie before I go to make sure the guy puts it on the right way around and the wheel goes back on the same.
