So the saga continues. I actually found a water temp sensor that had fallen off which would explain some of it not running right, but still have the issue of flattening out and losing power at cruising. Acceleration seems ok but when it gets up to speed in a given gear it feels like I've let off the gas, a noticeable sudden slowdown. That, and it makes a ton of noise at those times, which is also noticeable when it's in the garage "idling" around 2K RPM and up. I pulled the plug tubes to check the chains, and they just don't look right to me. Here's a pic of the rear, and it really seems like the chain is awfully close to the tube. I don't remember it being that close. I'm suspicious that I messed up the guide installation somehow but I don't know how that would translate to poor running. The front seems like that also but I couldn't get in there to get a good pic. The plugs also look odd, the rear seems ok but the front looks really sooty. All 4 plugs are new with about 25 miles on them. I can't find any other vacuum or electrical lines that aren't where they should be.

Really not right.... The rear cam chain tensioner, practically shot out of the cylinder when I loosened it. The end is over .35" (almost 9mm) inside the housing, and that's with the extenders installed. I think I got bit by that spring-kickback-overtensioned thing that Speed's talked about. The good news is that the guides seem to be right, I can push on them and they move and the chain gets a little tighter, so engine disassembly still isn't definite.

Man that's not good. Hard to tell about guides. Is both adjusters in that much?

If you removed adjuster without taking cap off first, it will go full in like that.

Yeah, duh, didn't think of that at first. Still, I had to push fairly hard to get the rear adjuster back in, and the chain looks like it's at least another 1/8" or more away from the tube now. It doesn't really look like the guides are off, just felt odd, especially the front. But I reinstalled the tensioners. then ran it for a minute and pulled the tubes and looked. Seems ok. Still the same sound & power loss, maybe at 3k now instead of 2 but really it's whenever the bike's no longer under acceleration. Here's another vid with the sound, not much to look at but may give a hint. I'm about out of ideas, but could the timing cause this? Both cams should be a little retarded (not unlike their installer, it seems...) plus.google.com/photos/photo/113736821984714034730/6362275325240774146?icm=false&authkey=CNvbtMLO4amUew

I see you have the air filter mod,did you re-jet the carb, and what size did you use.Have you moved the mixture screw,if so how many turns out is it.And what have you done to the bike prior to this problem,or has it just started doing it of its own account.

Ah, welcome. I have a Kawasaki Mean Streak which is fuel injected, so no carb to adjust. I do have the PC3 installed with a conservative map, but to be honest I find that it runs fine with no map at all.
There's a bit of history with this bike going back a couple of years at least. I had to change out the head gasket then and changed the rings while I was in there, but still had oil consumption issues. I just got around to re-ringing it a week ago and this issue showed up, so obviously I didn't do something right. Don't know exactly what yet until I get in there again but hopefully it'll just be in the top end.
