Ok, those of you with a Hot Box installed—please tell me about your experience with oil filter removal. I picked up a used Hot Box in pretty rough shape and gave it a little TLC, it came out pretty nice. It’s one of Dave Davis’s early editions.
So now it’s time for the first oil change since I installed it. I switched from a 3.5” Purolator 14610 filter to the shorter 2.5” 14612 to accommodate the box. My understanding at the time was I would be able to remove the filter without having to uninstall the Hot Box. Well, last night I found out this might not be the case. Not a lot of clearance there anyway, I got the filter spun almost off the mount, there is maybe 1 or 2 threads holding it on but it is up tight against the box at an upward angle. Anyone run into this? I really would prefer to not have to take the box off for oil changes. Ideas? Maybe just loosen the mounting bolts and try to move the box a little? Any other filter work better for removal?

I know mine is a tight fit but it comes out easily using the high flow filter HF204. I have a 03 1500 and also bought my hotbox used. Maybe just loosen it as you suggested. Good thing the hotbox only has 3 bolts holding it on. I just measured mine and the filter is just under 2.5" with 1.25" between filter and hotbox. My filter also has a pretty flat end unlike most filters that have a dome top.

It's tight, all right. Hopefully you already have a short filter on it instead of the longer one...
I use a rubber strap wrench from Harbor Freight as the filter wrench, I'm just able to fit it up behind & over the filter to loosen it. Getting it off and on requires some finagling.

Thanks hagger. You have 1.25" between the filter and hotbox? I definitely don't have that much. I'll measure when I get home but I'm guessing its 1" or less. Your right too, the Purolator does have that slight dome top to it. I don't believe there is any difference between an '03 1500 and an'07 1600 right?
Also do you think I could harm the threads on the filter mount from spinning the filter while its on there kind of cockeyed? Don't want to gall it up. I messed with it for about 15 min. last night spinning and moving it figuring I probably needed just the right angle to pop it off--no such luck.

Thanks lee..yeah its the shorter one, I measured it last night it's the 2.5" not the 3.5". So you usually have to mess with yours a bit to get it off huh? Do you think you have 1.25" between the filter and the box like hagger has? I know I don't. What filter you using?

I dont believe there is any difference between the 2 years as far as clearance. The threads should be fine as long as you didnt get it cross threaded

How old is your hotbox? The guy I bought mine from wasn't sure, he was the 2nd owner, but it had been on his bike since 2009. Maybe the design changed slightly over the years.

I dont know how old mine was when I got but I didnt get it until 2011 and it was on an 03. They may have changed a bit but I remember everyone that had one mentioned it was tight. I just did some research on that other not to be mentioned forum and from what I read the oil filter you have the 14612, should come off with out removal of the hotbox but of course should is the key word. Take the hotbox off this time and find a different filter with a flat end and see if that will work for ya. Taking the hotbox every oil change will risk damaging the fiberglass in my opinion so just be careful with it. With the filter I'm using it falls out when its loose, I just changed my oil last weekend and the filter fell into my drain pan and made a mess lol, if it were any longer it would be an issue.

Yep gonna take your advice and try another filter. Have a new 14612 on hand now but I can use it on the VN800B. Where do you source the HF204 filters hagger? Don't say Amazon, I want to find one on the way home from work today!

I was getting them at Performance Cycle when their store was close to me but they moved last fall and are now several miles from home so the last 2 I purchased were from ebay lol. I think they were $7 or $8 each. I just keep a spare around so I can change oil whenever I need to. here is a link to ebay www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=HF+204+OIL+FILTER&_sacat=0. Hopefully there is a performance cycle near you or on the way home.

Yep that's the one on my bike right now. My sons 2007 1500 classic takes a different filter but I do believe all Mean Streaks take the same filter.

You are welcome and yes Bluestreak will be here tomorrow, we will be going up into the mountain roads as long as the snow is melted. One of my favorite rides is over Trail Ridge road at 12183 ft elevation and that will not be open as it has 8ft of snow from last weeks storm. Thankfully there are plenty of roads that will be melted and still fun to ride.

The highest I have been was over Beartooth Pass in Montana, its about 11K I think. By the way, my '07 DOES take a different HiFlo filter per their fitment chart, the '07-'08's are PN HF303 and of course , it is longer, 7.3 cm or 2.87". The HF204 fits the '02-'03 1500's and the '04-'06 1600's. The HF204 is 6.4cm or 2.51". I have no idea why the '07 and '08's would be any different from '02-'06--if anyone knows please chime in!

Wanna thank lee, speed & especially hagger for the assist finding an oil filter that doesn't require hotbox removal. The HF204 works perfect! Photo 1 is a comparison of a Purolator 14612 (which was supposed to fit--did not for me) and the HF204. 2nd photo shows clearance on bike--easy on easy off now! Thanks guys
