Well, first the oil filter/Hot Box clearance issue (solved thanks to hagger), and now the new Idaho Jack Adapter I just picked up from Chucksters Customs. The Hot Box also interferes with proper installation of the adapter (see photo). The rear of the adapter contacts the box before the holes on the frame tabs/adapter line up so the pin cannot be inserted. I do not want to have to remove the box every time I need to lift the bike, so my question to y'all is: If I were to cut the required 4" off of the end of the adapter which would leave about 1.5" of square tube remaining beyond the frame tab allowing it to clear the box be OK (safe) in your collective opinions? Or would that compromise the ability to balance the center of gravity properly on the jack? I would of course strap the bike to the jack. Attachments:

I found these photos on the web. Looks like the jack point to the rear is right under the frame tab, leading me to believe I should be ok to shorten the adapter--right? Or am I missing something. Attachments:

You should be fine cutting off the tube. The bike weight is being lifted on the tabs in the rear anyway. I have that same exact adapter and it clears my older but current hotbox. Maybe the boxes are a little different. If it were mine I would cut it off.

That's my thinking too hagger. BUT, I emailed Bud Smalley, who makes the adapter, and he was less sure. He hasn't run across this issue before (interference with a hot box), in fact he had never heard of the hot box until now. Great guy, even offered to buy it back, but I'm gonna try to make it work. Bud thought cutting it might limit my ability to find the bikes balance point. But as you see from the pictures I posted, that MS is balanced with jack directly under the frame tabs. So I should be ok, right? Gonna cut it and try I think...
How bout you, do you recall if you lift yours with the jack in the same position as shown in those photos?

I not positive but its pretty close to the pics. I can check my adapter when I get home to see how it fits and lift the bike then take a pic and post it if you would like before you cut the adapter. Or Just remove enough tube to clear the hotbox.

Thanks hagger. again. Yo sure don't gotta do it today, I prob wont cut the tube (if I do) until maybe Friday evening--but if you get a chance to post a pic that would be great. Please don't go outta your way tho.
Anyone else got a thought on this--or a pic of their Meanie lifted using an Idaho jack adapter?

Well son of a gun. Great pictures hagger, thanks a LOT for taking the time. The hot box design must have changed at some point I guess? Maybe I'll give Dave Davis a call to confirm, he is a good guy.I really like the box but it has presented me with some challenges as you know. Boy, you are using every inch of that adapter to lift your bike.
So with your bags and trunk stuffed full, do you think that shifts the COG that much further back? I don't have any extra weight toward the rear on mine. Still might cut the adapter and give it a try, I'm kinda outta ideas on how to lift it now. I use hockey pucks on my other bike but it's a VN800B, a lot lighter.

I can only guess but I dont think whats in my bags weighs more than 30 lbs but a little weight could change the balance point quite a bit. In the pic you had in your earlier post that bike was pretty much stock and nothing on the back and it was forward of where mine is, its just under the pins. I've never had an issue attaching the adapter bracket so you must be right the hotbox changed at some point. A little weight on the front might help if you want to keep the adapter. These bikes are all the same but completely different lol. What if you just cut a little off the end at an angle just to clear the hotbox? Its so close to fitting.

Hmmm..thats an idea. Will consider that. Looks like your adapter touches the hotbox on the right side but not on the left? Truthfully, I could take the hotbox off whenever I lift it, just didn't want to have to take that step.
Thanks again for the pictures and your suggestions hagger. I'll let ya know what I come up with brother!

Yep not even close on the left side. Were you having troubles on both sides? It looks like your pic is from the right side.

You'll be fine. The jack should have one arm right under the frame tabs anyway. I had the same problem with mine and actually never used the adapter. Just lift it by the tabs and oil pan. I know it sounds odd, but if you look at the manual the instructions are to jack it up by the tabs and put another jack under the oil pan to raise the front, so.... I figure this isn't any worse. At least my lift arms are padded

I think what I'm gonna end up doing is cutting back the right side of the adapter about 4" and leave the left side alone as it doesn't present a clearance issue. I can run the jack in at an angle and still be fully on the adapter if needed.. but I don't think I'll even have to do that, like you said, I'm pretty sure as long as I am directly under the tabs it'll work. I'll post up some pics when I get it up in the air.

Remembered I promised to post pics of my little adapter mod. Cut about 4" off the right side, for the record it works just fine.
