Hello from another Newbie - pointed this way by Texas - thanks for the sign up. I bought a Meanie frame and forks so I'm going the do-it-yourself method for getting my Meanie. The frame has been shot blasted and powder coated in Persimmon and looks great. I've managed to get front and rear SE style fenders and I'm slowly sourcing the rest of the bits and pieces I need. I expect I'll find plenty of questions along the way so I think I'll be a regular here and annoy people with my newbie questions :-) Here's one to start off - since I'm building from scratch I have the motor in pieces to check everything over properly before building. This would be a good time to do some basic mods, one of which I'm thinking about is the use of 1500 piston rods in the engine. I assume the idea is to get the compression ratio up but I assume that longer rods mean I need shorter pistons - am I right? If yes, can someone tell me the method for this mod? What's the amount that needs to come off the pistons? Any other gotchas with this method? Would you still run with the KACR mechanism at higher compressions? (I chucked the KACR when I rebuilt my old BUBF engine and never had any trouble starting) Many thanks! I'll post pictures when I get some, I don't collect the frame etc until end of March (Payday!) Ok, here is a little bit of info. 1600 rods are 6.975", 1500 are 7.075 Due to the .200 longer stroke of the 1600 they have shorter rods. If you want to use the 1500 rods in a 1600, which I have done, yes you will need a shorter piston so to speak. This is called compression height. Stock pistons both 1500 and 1600 are around 1.175", I use a 1.090" when using 1500 rods. Also I have the rod small end bushed for.927 Piston pin. Stock pins are .944. I use a Piston with .927 pin. Next builds I am using stock size pins, will resize Piston pin bore. When using 1500 rods in a 1500 or 1600 rods in 1600 I use a 1.187 compression height Piston. I adjust the deck height by different thickness base gaskets. I run my own pretty close but I try to get the Piston deck height around .038 in the hole, this along with the .007 thickness head gasket works well. Stock pistons have a 27cc dish, I like to use a Piston with around 6 cc dish or valve pockets. I use pistons with zero dish on some. My personal engine is close to 14:1. You are safe on pump 93 gas with 6 cc pistons at above deck height.

That's very useful info, many thanks. One question - why do you bush the rod small end? Why not run with standard size?
I converted a car engine using longer rods years back and had to shorten the pistons by around 2mm, engine worked just fine and produced considerably more power. I didn't do anything with the small ends though - that's why I was wondering. Good idea using gasket thickness to adjust the height :-)
Edit, just re-read your post and saw you use different pistons hence the need to re-bush the small end. Could I use standard but shortened MS1600 pistons'? What pistons are you using? Thanks

Welcome Lagger, glad you're here. You'll have great conversations with Speed, no doubt. Glad you made it over too, MassMax.[/quote ] Thanks :-)

Could I use standard but shortened MS1600 pistons'? What pistons are you using? Thanks You can cut the tops of the pistons if ya want, done that as well. I used 1500 pistons in ace of the 1600 pistons because the 1500's have a more gradual angle if ya will. The 1600's are sharper with flat bottom, so cutting the 1500 nets a larger decrease in the cc's. I have pics somewhere. I was only able to reduce the cc volume to around 12cc though. That yielded around 11:1. I also grind and Polish the beams of the rods. Rebalance them as well. Stock the pistons are in the hole around .060 so the Piston will be out of the hole around .040. So you want to test fit to see exactly how much ya got out, then cut to get it in hole around .035-.038. Problem becomes though the top ring is getting pretty close to the top. As I said I run mine very tight. Only around a total of .028 in the hole including head gasket. These engine have a no quench for most part design, like a hemisphere style head with the exception of plug placement, so tight is what makes power and less detonation. I will get some pics together later and post

Great info, many thanks. I'll do some trial fitting and get my vernier out to take proper measurements. Cheers

Hello Ponkster - another UK based member! Trouble is you're way up North and I'm way down South (yes, I'm a bloody Sassenach!) I too was on the "other place" but not really very active, there's a lot of mud slinging going on and I'm grateful to Texas for pushing me in the direction of this place - I find it very helpful with some great folks here. Cheers

I regularly ride to rallies and events down south - where do you live?

Max, I'm in Bennington, north edge of the Monadnock region. Would love to get together and go riding. Never quite as happy as I am on the Meanie into the wind. BTW, your black assassin Meanie looks really sharp. Sounds good Kahn, I'm always flying up Rte 16 to ride. NH and Maine are my go to states to escape the congestion in Mass. The "Live Free or Die" state is a great place to ride.

Max, I'm in Bennington... .......The "Live Free or Die" state is a great place to ride...... With the recent mass immigration of MASS voters into NH, we've had to change the State Motto just a tad. It now reads, "Live Free Mostly but Make Sure Your Taxes are Paid Up" However, we do have concealed carry with no permit required. Robberies in Convenience Stores are down across the State lol!
